Brown Creeper
Certhia americana
As you scan the woods adjacent to your lawn, you notice what appears to be a piece of bark moving up a tree trunk. It slowly spirals upward, pausing periodically, until it suddenly flies to the base of another tree and begins the process anew. Congratulations and grab the binoculars, you have found North America’s only “treecreeper,” a Brown Creeper!American Goldfinch
Carduelis tristis
The American Goldfinch is an abundant and widely distributed species that regularly visits backyard birdfeeders. The type of habitat preferred by goldfinches for finding their favorite foods and preferred nesting sites can be described as weedy fields, orchards, and suburban yards.

Pine Siskin
Carduelis pinus
Mention the name and those familiar with this songbird conjure an image of this little acrobat hanging upside down in an evergreen tree picking seeds from a pine cone. The soundtrack to this mental movie contains the signature vocalization that indicates a Pine Siskin is nearby: a buzzy, raspy “zree-ee-e-e-e” that rises in pitch as it progresses.
