White-crowned Sparrow
Zonotrichia leucophrys
Formal attire required? No problem for a White-crowned Sparrow. The only thing missing is a boutonniere! The bold head patterns, white on top bordered by broad black stripes bordered by white above the eye and a final black stripe extending from behind the eye to the back of the head, give these beauties their handsome appearance. All of this is presented on the grey background of the rest of the head, breast, and belly. Do a pair make a lovely couple? Yes. She looks exactly the same.>>More about White-crowned Sparrow

Zonotrichia albicollis
Where you live in the eastern United States determines when you get to enjoy this on-the-move songbird. White-throated Sparrows breed in Canada, into the northern Great Lakes states, and along the Appalachian ridge to northern New Jersey. The common denominator as to where they are found in the summer is evergreen trees.

Eastern Towhee
Pipilo erythrophthalmus
A number of bird’s names are derived from their vocalizations. The list includes chickadee, phoebe, pewee, killdeer, and whip-poor-will. Add the Eastern Towhee to this list as its name brings to mind the loud, abrupt contact note these birds use to communicate.
